13Al First circulating Aluminum coin.
Prior to the invention of the Hall-Héroult electrolytic process in 1886, aluminum could be made only in small quantities via difficult chemical process, and was therefore more valuable than gold. By 1907 Aluminum was inexpensive enough to make among the least valuable coins. (JM1)
