Description:
1136 King Stephen penny, Watford type minted by Richard of Shaftesbury. Stephen usurped the throne from his cousin the Empress Matilda after her father's death in 1135. Thus ensued a Civil War between the two parties for much of his reign, Stephen managed to hold onto his throne with one concession, Matilda's son Henry would succeed him when he died.
