Description:
1260 Henry III Long Cross Penny, issued by William of Canterbury. By Henry III's reign there were two problems evident with the Short Cross coinage introduced in 1180. Firstly the workmanship had become increasingly crude in execution and secondly the problem of clipping. To help prevent unscrupulous individuals from shearing off bits of silver and passing off underweight coins at a profit the cross on the reverse was extended to the edges of the coin.
