1280 Edward I Bristol mint penny. The Long Cross Penny issued in 1247 had followed the way of the Short Cross before it and develved into the levels of crudness and poor workmanship. By 1279 Edward I decided to undertake a mass recoinage and a new style was born. This coinage was so successful that it was imitated extensively on the Continent.
