Description:
1875 Ireland Drogheda School Medal. Silver: 44MM./38.55 gms.Obv: A head of Minerva with helmet, and armour on upper of bust with ancient warship background. Inscribed INGENIO VIRTUTE LABORE inLatin, meaning "by telent, viryue, toil." Hand-engraved inscription reda DROGHEDA SCHOOL JOHN L WHITTY MASTER. Rev: A shield, which supported and rests on an anchor, bearing the Arms of Erasmus Smith, halm wreath at the sides. Inscribed MUNIFICENTIA ERASMI SMITH, means "of the liberality of Erasmus Smith" The translations are from Metropolitan Museum webpage.
