Description:
1888 Australia Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition Medal origianl designed by E.A. Altman, re-work by George Anderson & engraved by Stokes & Martin. Silver: 2 inches./88 gm.
Obv: Portriat of Queen Victoria in Crowned & Veiled to left. Rev: A wreath composed of the leaves and acorns of British oak and the leaves and acorns of the wattle. The oak & wattle were tied together by a truelovers's knot., symbolizing the unity and affaction between the mother country & colony. The mitto "ARTIBUS DIGNIS, HONOR INSIGNIS" to the deserving arts, distinguished honour -was placed within wreath, encircling the Southern Cross. Date MCCCLXXVIII below.
