1838 Denmark Bertel Thorvalsen Medal. Silver: 61.3 MM./149.4 gms.
Obv: Head right of leading sculptor In broad border with continuous band of minute reproductions of hos sculptures. Rev: Seated Diana in mural crown and nude muse of the sea seated on dolphin hold small putto with lyre. Border presents 16 compartments holding tiny replicas of Thorvaldsen's classical sculptures. Latin HAMBURG 1838. This medal by Christensen (1806-1844) recalls the British Royal Mint experience with Pistrucci's Waterpp Medal of similarly baffing complecty. Originally intended as a gift from the Kingdom of Denmark to be predented to Thorvaldsen upon his return from a lengthy stay abroad. It took so long to complete the dies that the medal was omly completed and strunk by 1844, just before the sculptor's death.
