Obv: The inner part of the coin shows the treaty signed by the original six member states of the European Coal and Steel Community, on a background symbolising Michelangelo's paving on the Piazza del Campidoglio in Romewhere the treaty was signed. The translation of EUROPE is inscribed above the book, but within the central design (EUROPA), whereas the translation of TREATY OF ROME 50 YEARS appears above the design (VERTRAG VON ROM 50 JAHRE). The year mark and the name of the issuing country are inscribed below the design (REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH). The twelve stars of the European Union surround the design on the outer ring of the coin. Rev: 2 on the left-hand side, six straight lines run vertically between the lower and upper right-hand side of the face, 12 stars are superimposed on these lines, one just before the two ends of each line, superimposed on the mid - and upper section of these lines; the European continent ( extended ) is represented on the right-hand side of the face; the right-hand part of the representation is superimposed on the mid-section of the lines; the word ‘EURO’ is superimposed horizontally across the middle of the right-hand side of the face. Under the ‘O’ of EURO, the initials ‘LL’ of the engraver appear near the right-hand edge of the coin. Edge: Reeded with 2 EURO ***, repeated four times, alternately upright and inverted.
