Japan was shut off from the western world from the 17th to the 19th century, but then rapidly industrialised. These magnificent silver one yen coins were issued from 1870 to 1914, and reflect Japan's growing importance as a trading nation. Ours is from the 21st year of Meiji (Matsuhito's) rule = 1888.
