Description:
Unpublished 'Kai Yuan Tong Bao' variety. Tang Dynasty Emperor Gaozu (618-626 AD, 1st emperor), Cash. 3.4g, Bronze, 25.07mm. Obv.: Big Characters narrow 'Yuan' type, star below 'Bao'. The emperor established a new coinage system which had a profound influence throughout East Asia. The new Chinese coinage had a decimal base, with each coin weighing a tenth of a Chinese ounce and measuring a tenth of a Chinese foot in diameter (J. Williams 1997). Note: 'Kai yuan' mean 'new beginning'. Extra fine.
