Eclecticus collection
Ireland, 1729, Copper Halfpenny token of James Maculla, Dublin, 29.0 mm.

Just four years after the debacle of William Wood's 1722-24 coinage and Jonathan Swift's Drapier's Letters, a Dublin brazier named James Maculla issued tokens which he sold at 2 Shillings per pound weight, and redeemed at 1 Shilling 8d per pound weight. Swift also opposed these, believing copper tokens should contain their full intrinsic value of metal, but Maculla went ahead with his issues beginning in 1728.
