Description:
12Mg The Lodz (renamed Litzmannstadt) ghetto in Poland made coins of Magnesium alloy out of recycled metal from downed airplanes. As the Jews in the ghetto were not allowed to use Nazi money, they were forced to use these instead. Magnesium corrodes easily and many of these coins were used as fire-starters by the prisoners during the harsh winters. Furthermore, as they had no value after the war, most were simply discarded when the ghetto was liberated. Thus, finding a piece in good condition is difficult, though many counterfeits exist. 1.8g, 28mm diameter x 1.8mm thickness (JM10)
